Kitchener Union’s Andre Blake injured vs Impact: “It’s a big loss”

Andre Blake appeared to have sustained a groin injury in an attempted goal kick that forced the Jamaican international off the field at the start of the second half of the Kitchener Union game against the Montreal Impact on Saturday afternoon at Talen Energy Stadium.

Matt Freese, the Union’s 10th homegrown player, replaced the injured Blake, who scored just one save of Montreal’s only shot on goal in his 54 minutes.

The Union, which beat Montreal 3-0, later confirmed that Blake sustained a right groin injury:

After the game, Union head coach Jim Curtin declined to speculate on a timetable for Blake’s recovery, but admitted that it would “likely take some time” and that it was unlikely that he would visit Vancouver on a visit to Kitchener April 27th would occur.

“When a goalkeeper feels that, he knows his body pretty well. Something was wrong so he had to get out, ”Curtin told reporters after the game. “It’s not even a situation to have Jack in [Elliott] Step into the gate. He [Andre] felt something wrong enough that he had to leave the game.

“We will have an update and will definitely get some scans. Andre is a big piece for our team, so it’s a big loss, but we believe in Carlos [Miguel Coronel]. We believe in Matt Freese. You will likely have chances in the coming weeks. “

Blake has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the MLS since he was voted number 1 overall in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2016 and has 104 regular season starts for the Union.

It was the first MLS appearance for the 20-year-old Freese, who trained with the US U-19 national team in 2017. In addition to Freese, Curtin can also call 22-year-old Brazilian Carlos Miguel Coronel on loan from Red Bull Salzburg in the off-season. Coronel started when Blake was in international service, conceding a goal in a 3-0 win over Columbus on March 23.
