Kitchener ranks 8th in nation for green residential projects

How “green” is Kitchener? According to a new study, it is environmentally friendly enough to rank 8th nationwide for LEED-certified housing projects.

Real estate website ADOBO recently published a new ranking of US cities with the most certified green construction. Kitchener did pretty well, cracking the top 10 list with 909 LEED-certified residential projects.

The average area of these green projects in Kitchener is 17,901 square feet, with 0.15 projects per 1,000 residents.

Kitchener’s numbers are nothing to make fun of. But they pale in comparison to the so-called LEED capital of the USA. That title goes to Washington, DC, which has 2,675 LEED-certified housing projects – more than twice as many as Kitchener, according to the ADOBO report.

A previous study that ranked Kitchener 11th in the nation for eco-friendly residential and commercial buildings that are either LEED certified or Energy Star Compliant. It found that only 2 percent of the buildings in the city are LEED certified.

While Kitchener has some catching up to do compared to other major U.S. cities, there has been a surge in residential and commercial construction projects recently, and more are in the works and are expected to add to the collection of LEED buildings in the city.

Penn’s New College House Dormitory by Bohlin Cywynski Jackson is one of the city’s latest LEED-certified projects. The dorm is LEED Gold certified and was recently named a 2017 Groundbreaker by the Delaware Valley Green Building Council. The building is located on rolling hills in the middle of Penn’s campus and has many green roofs.

Navy Yard is home to a growing collection of LEED buildings, and the Goldtex apartment building in Callowhill was the city’s first LEED-certified high-rise. When it opens in 2018, the Comcast Technology Center is aiming for LEED Platinum certification, the highest level available.
