Kitchener Food Bank Hit With $1m Cyber Attack

Kitchener hunger relief group Philabundance announces that it was the victim of a cyber attack in July 2020 when the nonprofit deposited nearly $ 1 million in payment of a fraudulent building bill related to the completion of its new Philabundance Community Kitchen. Extract from the philabundance declaration:

“This fraud was a one-time occurrence and did not affect the ongoing finances of our organization or personal information of employees. Our online donation system was also not affected. Our donors can be confident that their donations have reached us via this online platform and will continue to do so. They are used to feed hundreds of thousands of people in our region who are not getting enough to eat. We have improved our IT security systems and financial controls to protect every single dollar we collect. We are both thoughtful and aggressive when it comes to taking these safety precautions to make sure this never happens again. “

It’s time for cybersecurity professionals to broaden and volunteer their expertise as advisors and assistants for our local food banks.

In the last week alone, around 5.6 million households in the United States were fighting for food. Local food banks are struggling to procure food and find the resources to feed those in need this surreal year. They also work hard to find volunteers at a time when the need for them has skyrocketed and human contact equates with potential safety risks. In the last week alone, around 5.6 million households in the United States were fighting for food. Local food banks are struggling to procure food and find the resources to feed those in need this surreal year. They also work hard to find volunteers at a time when the need for them has skyrocketed and human contact equates to potential safety risks. Some statistics say that of the 54 million families currently facing food insecurity, there may be 1 in 4 children in the United States. Of the people who receive help from this organization, an estimated 30% are children and 16% are seniors. These numbers can include veterans, single parents, disabled families, and working-class families suffering from unprecedented stress. This attack is inexcusable and could serve as a call to action for those of us in the cybersecurity community. It’s time for cybersecurity professionals to broaden and volunteer their expertise as advisors and assistants for our local food banks. It’s up to us at the grassroots, because right now there is no one doing that. From systems analysis to BEC to anti-phishing advice, there are incredibly meaningful ways we can contribute to society. If experts can donate their time free of charge, it helps us all. For cybersecurity professionals who may not feel highly qualified to help in this way, they can share their thoughts online (provided, of course, they DO NOT refer to the name of a food bank that they believe may not be up to par – there is no need to compromise other food banks).
